Pilot Whale Rescue In New Zealand

A pod of eleven pilot whales recently got stuck and stranded on Matarangi beach in New Zealand. Sadly four died but volunteers managed to rescue seven whales including a baby.

Rescuers dug a seawater pool around each whale and used buckets of water and towels to keep them cool and protected from the sun. Some people talked to the frightened whales to reassure and calm them while everyone waited for the tide to come in.

Finally, the whales were refloated and able to swim again; they were guided into deeper, safer waters by four boats.
