Orcas On The Move

A family pod of four orcas, known as Riptide, Zena, Dropi and Acquamarin, have travelled all the way from Iceland to Italy.

This remarkable journey of over 3000 miles (5000 km) is the longest known migration for orcas. The family was photographed in Iceland during the summer of 2017 and has now made this epic journey southwards past the UK, Spain and Portugal, into the Mediterranean Sea and then along the Italian coast, to the island of Sicily where they have been hunting tuna.

We’re not sure why these orcas travelled so far from their usual cold sea home, perhaps they were following or looking for prey and new habitats or it could be for another reason.  We are all waiting to see wherethe family goes next.
