Norwegian Whalers Facing Growing Challenges

The Norwegian publication FiskeribladetFiskaren is reporting that the country's minke whalers will be holding their annual meeting later this week, in the face of growing challenges to the industry.

Despite the fact that millions have been invested in product development, the industry is still struggling both with the domestic market and trying to get exports on track.

According to the article, this year the whale hunt "wound up with fewer buyers, fewer vessels and fewer distributors who are willing to invest in such a narrow sector as whale meat."

The 468 whales killed this year -- only 36% of the quota the whalers had been given -- is the lowest number of animals in ten years.

The 2011 whaling quota will likely be announced during the meeting.
