Obama Helps Anti-whaling Campaign
Following a WDCS-led anti-whaling petition that hundreds of thousands of you signed, President Obama has confirmed that the US government wants to see an end to Iceland’s fin whale hunting and may take action – such as stopping funding for projects or cancelling meetings – if the whaling does not stop for good.
So a big thank you to all of you who wrote to the US government.
This will put pressure on Iceland to take a long hard look at whether it is worth continuing with its whaling in the future.
But, remember, you can still help us put pressure on Iceland to end its whaling by not going to any restaurants in Iceland that sell whale meat and by not buying any fish from Iceland that has clear links to the whaling industry. Find out more!
How many whales have been killed?
Since 2006, when Iceland started commercial whaling again, it has killed 280 endangered fin whales, and 186 minke whales. Iceland has also sold over 1000 tons of whale meat, blubber and oil to Japan, Norway and the Faroe Islands, and has even illegally sent whale products to Latvia and Belarus.
All this is taking place despite the International Whaling Commission (IWC) ban on commercial whaling.
