Rare Sperm Whale Sighting Off Vancouver Island

Researchers in Canada were amazed to record the first sighting in over 30 years of a sperm whale in Johnstone Strait off Vancouver Island last week.

The area is famous for being home to the Northern resident population of orcas, that include the whales of WDC's Adopt an Orca programme.

WDC helps to fund the vital research carried out by Paul Spong and Helena Symonds at Orcalab, who identified the sperm whale after hearing the sounds it was making on their hydrophones (underwater microphones). A fellow researcher, Jared Towers, was then able to go out on the water and see the whale, which he estimated to be around 40ft long.
