Military In Wales Help Dolphins
The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has put listening systems in place to help prevent dolphins being killed in military testing areas in Cardigan Bay (west Wales).
There is increasing evidence that the types of tests used by the military have a big impact on dolphins, for example, by damaging their hearing so that they become confused and may not be able to echolocate properly to find food.
Cardigan Bay is home to a pod of bottlenose dolphins. Scientists will be listening for dolphin clicks that enter the military zone, and then all firing will be stopped until the dolphins have left. This is really important to help to protect the dolphins in the west Wales area; WDC would now like to see the same types of monitoring in all military marine areas across the UK.
