It is important to both the individual and the survival of the population (or species) that its habitats continue to be suitable to support it.
Changes in the atmosphere, weather patterns and marine ecosystems are currently being observed. Predictions include sea surface changes and sea level rise. Changes in the ice-caps may affect rainfall and salinity, and temperate changes may impact on coastal upwelling regions causing a possible reduction in nutrient concentrations and 'productivity' which in turn can impact whole food chains.
The modification of habitats may cause shifts in whale, dolphin and porpoise food sources and the ability of populations to adapt to this rapid change may be compromised. All of the pressures that whales, dolphins and porpoises now face make them more susceptible to disease.
The world has never faced such a global problem before. It is vital that WDCS stays at the forefront to make sure that whale, dolphin and porpoise needs are heard by the world's decision makers.

Creating Sanctuary
The importance of protecting the habitats critical to the survival of whales and dolphins is at the core of WDCS’s mission and our work around the world.
