Stop Whaling Campaign
Is the fish you buy supplied by Icelandic whalers?
Fish and Chips - The truth behind one of the UK’s favourite dishes
• There are currently 10,500 fish and chip shops in the UK.
• 250 million fish and chip meals are sold in the UK each year.
• Half of the adult population in the UK visits a fish and chip shop at least once a month.
• WDCS is now looking at meals served to children in schools. The UK's best-selling newspaper has featured our campaign with Sea Life.
But do you know where some of that fish comes from?
-
The Hvalur whaling company is Iceland’s biggest whaler. Its managing director, Kristjan Loftsson, also has interests in HB Grandi, one of Iceland’s biggest fishing companies, and the relationship between the fishermen and the whalers in this case could not be cosier.
-
Hvalur uses HB Grandi facilities to process fin whale products, and the two share information on the location of fish. More than half of HB Grandi fish exports go directly to the UK and the rest of Europe. In the UK, much of that fish goes through one of the biggest wholesalers to the fish and chip trade - Warners Fish Merchants.
Warners buys nearly all its fish from HB Grandi and it is estimated that Warners alone supplies 8% of the UK fish and chip market.
Batter Warners not whales
By pressuring fish suppliers and retailers like Warners, we can help make sure the fish we eat is not contributing to the whaling industry in Iceland. You can change the way big international companies do business and this makes a massive difference.
What can you do?
You won’t see Warners' brand name on your high street but you could be eating their fish.
-
Contact Warners. Simply use the email letter we have provided, which asks the company to reconsider where it sources its fish because you do not wish to buy fish that has links to whaling.
Who buys fish connected with whalers?
Check out who else is buying this fish, and the big retailers who won’t touch it.
