UK's No.1 Fish And Chip Restaurant Backs Us!

Colmans Fish and Chip RestaurantColmans, voted the UKs No1 Fish and Chip Restaurant for 2011, has publicly endorsed the WDCS consumer drive to get restaurants, fish and chip shops and other food outlets to reconsider buying fish caught by HB Grandi - an Icelandic fishing company with clear links to the whaling industry in Iceland itself.

Much of this fish is distributed in the UK by a wholesaler called Warners Fish Merchants and, shortly after the campaign launch, Colmans contacted WDCS directly to offer its backing and to encourage others in the fish and chip trade to check the source of the fish that they serve to customers.

Owner, Richard Ord told WDCS; "I fully support the WDCS campaign.  Colmans will not deal with any supplier who has connections with the destruction of whales, and we ensure that our fish suppliers are checked and have to confirm in writing to us that they adhere to our strict procurement criteria .

"We do not use any fish from Warners, or Grandi, and we would urge other fryers who might not be aware of the situation to check with there own suppliers."

WDCS applauds Colmans for their stance and hopes that we can encourage other chip shop owners to join our list of Good Guys who dont buy fish that helps financially support whaling in Iceland.  We urge members of the public to ask their local fish and chip shop where they get there fish from, and if it is from Warners (or Grandi direct) then let WDCS know.

And, if you like your fish and chips and are ever in South Shields, Tyne and Wear then pop in and see why Colmans is the UK no1!
