Oil Giant Moves Into Arctic

Environmental organisations have expressed grave concern at the announcement that a deal has been made between BP and Russia to allow oil and gas extraction in the Kara Sea on the Arctic coast of Siberia. The deal was announced on Friday evening.

The Kara Sea is relatively pristine and home to populations of bowhead whales, belugas and narwhals, as well as walruses and seal species.

The Kara Sea is adjacent to the Barrent's Sea and a WWF report on the vulnerability of this sea area to industrial development illustrates the concerns that exist for the Kara Sea too. Click here for this report.
