Mother Dies Trying To Rescue Calf

A female whale is thought to have died at Parsons Beach South Australia attempting to rescue her stricken calf.  A representative from Australia’s Department of Environment and Heritage said that the mother had lacerations on her underside where it appeared she attempted to get across the reef to her stranded calf.

Initially, the dead calf was spotted and then an adult whale was seen in the water very close to the beach on the inside of the reef. Fisheries officers managed to get the larger whale off the reef and out into the open water. They thought they had been successful in rescuing the whale, but they found the whale beached again the following morning.

Officials suggested that there is a very good chance that the other whale was the calf’s mother and that she was trying to rescue her offspring.
