Last month, San Francisco's Pier 39 groaned under the weight of some 1,500 sealions. Now they have abandoned the entire sea front and no one knows why.
The first bull sea lions arrived in late 1989, but the animals began to depart in November 2009, despite a 20th anniversary party which had been planned to celebrate their presence for 15 January.
It is possible that the sealions prey has moved and they have left to find it, or possibly they are not party animal after all!
