The US government has signed up to an international agreement which aims to address the threats facing whales and dolphins in the Pacific Island Region.
Known as the Pacific Cetaceans MOU, the agreement helps the many species that migrate through the region (such as the humpback whale) that are endangered because of a range of threats including; entanglement in fishing gear or marine debris, climate change, damage and loss of habitat, or disturbance by human activities.
“WDCS congratulates the US government for signing on to the CMS Pacific Cetaceans MoU. Their involvement can only strengthen the work being undertaken by other signatories and is great news for whales and dolphins in the Pacific Islands Region,” said Nicola Hodgins, WDCS programme lead.
